In 2016 I had an unforgettable experience on the island of Mallorca. I stayed on the island for 50 days as part of my ceramic apprenticeship with ceramics artist Maria De Haan. I was living in beautiful village Deià in mountains, where I explored beautiful nature, architectures, and culture. Later, I decided to extend my stay for 10 more days, rent a car and travel around the island.

In 2016 as I finished my courses at college, I moved back home from the city Maribor. As some already know my passion for ceramics I decided to do something more with it. So I was 2 weeks on making new things and trying to monetize some things I did before. When one evening I crossed by Maria’s post on Instagram for an apprenticeship position on Mallorca. I emailed her right away, and 5 days later I was on the plane. At home, I just said “On Tuesday I am going to Mallorca.”, and at first, they didn’t like the idea of me going all alone chasing something that I found on social media. I liked the work Maria is doing and the idea of an appetizer of Spain for my next year’s student exchange in Barcelona. For me, this was the first time on a plane and in Spain.
I got there on 7th of September and I was quickly amazed by the scenery, especially when I got into the mountains. For next 44 days, I stayed in beautiful village Deià in mountains. There I helped Maria with ceramic courses and preparations for her two exhibitions. You can read more about ceramics experience at my post Ceramics assistant on the island of Mallorca. Almost every day after work we went swimming at a beautiful rocky coast. I explored close surroundings and on weekends I went on longer trips with friends or alone, explore city Palma by bicycle, attend garden parties or sometimes just relax on a sandy beach. I meet a lot of local and people from all over the world. A lot of artists live there and a lot of people speak English. Later I was surprised how in some other parts of the island instead of English they are more German spoken. That is because Mallorca is one of the top destinations for Germans. I would say that my favorite part of the island is North and North-West. Most memorable places I visited would be Port de Sa Calobra and Snake road to it, Cap de Formentor, Cuevas del Drach, Es Pontas natural arc, cactus farm, Cala Mesquida, Cala Pi, village Deià, Fortnaluxe and other surrounding villages. Should I say something about food? Fantástico! I fell in love with Spanish cuisine and I really like the Tapas concept. I had a really great time there and those 40 days went by like paper in the wind. So I decided to extend my visit for another 10 days. In that time I built a website for Maria, make one last piece on a pottery wheel, and 6 days before leaving I rented a car and traveled around the island. You can read more about all the places I visited in my post Around the island of Mallorca in 6 days. On last day I returned the car at the airport and flew from warm 24°C in Palma to cold 2°C in Graz.
I had a blast and I can say that this experience changed my life. And for that, I have to sincerely thank Maria. She was the best host and mentor. I am an amateur photographer, but still, I am comfortable sharing only images that I really like. Bellow, you can look at my favorite pictures that I took while staying and traveling on the island of Mallorca. Hasta la vista Mallorca!
