I always had a dream to rent a car and drive around some island. My wish got true when I was staying on the island of Mallorca as ceramics assistant at Maria De Haan Ceramics. You can see my favorite images from the trip in my post 50 days on the island of Mallorca. And if you are looking for cool adventure on Mallorca, also check my post Ceramics assistant on the island of Mallorca.
As my work as ceramics assistant finished and 40 days went by so fast I decided to extend my stay and travel around the island. 6 days before leaving I rented a car and drove toward new adventures. My plan was to travel all around the island closest as possible to the coast and visit beautiful cities, villages, beaches and other natural sights. I made a list of some places that I wanted to visit for sure, the rest I planned on the way. I charted the path and then divided it into 6 pieces. My start and the end point was at Palma de Mallorca Airport, where I rented the car. On this trip, I made more pictures than on the rest of my stay on the island. My plan was to capture beautiful Majorca, but I realized that for a greate picture you kind of have to be in the right place at the right time when the weather and light is ok. I usually share only pictures I really like, but here I will give it a little slack.

Day 1
I wanted to get the most of my first day, so I went to the rent a car company early in the morning. I finally got to the order, and that is when my plan crushed. The day before when I rented a car over the phone they told me that they accept debit cards, but they couldn’t accept my debit card. We found another solution but I had to wait until 6 PM, so I headed to the city Palma and explore it some more. When I finally got my car I headed on my way. At that time it was already getting dark, so on my first day, I made only 30 km to the city S’Arenal. This night I just crashed in a car.
Day 2
I found sleeping in a car good idea because I woke up at first light, quickly refreshed and carried on with my travel right away. My first stop was Cala Blava and then I stopped at Tolleric, Cala Pi, S’Estanyol, Sa Rapita, Es Trenc, Ses Salines, Santanyi, Cala Llombards, Cala Santanyi, Cala Figuera, Parc Natural de Mondrago, Portopetro, Cala Gran and the last stop for the day was Cala D’or, where I also slept in car. In Tolleric I just turned around as I seen a bunch of residential vacation buildings. In other places that I stopped there was more to see. I really liked Cala Pi, Parc Natural de Mondrago, a cactus farm outside of Ses Salines and natural arc Es Pontas at Cala Santanyi.
Day 3
I carried on with my trip at first light. I stopped at Cala Marcal, Felanitx, Cala Murada, Calles de Mallorca, Cala Anguila, Cala Mendia, Manacor, Porto Cristo, Cala Millor, Cala Bona, Costa dels Pins, Canyamel. In the morning I looked at the map and tried to memorize the path but I made the wrong turn and eventually ended in Felanitx. And I was glad that I took the wrong turn because there, on the hill, I saw a lot of old windmill towers and also one restored windmill. In Manacor, I went to underground caves Cuevas del Drach, which was one of the most memorable experiences on the Mallorca and I recommend everybody to visit if you are on the Mallorca. Later I also went to caves Cover d’Arta, but they closed 20 min before I got there. So I went to look at Tower Porxada de Sa Tore, where some old farm tools are displayed and by the looks, there is a nice fancy restaurant. It was getting dark so I headed to Cala Ratjada where I booked a hotel room. In Cala Ratjada, there is a lot of sculptures all over the city.
Day 4
Sleeping in a hotel was nice but I slept much longer. I woke up after 10:00 and I went for another walk in Cala Ratjada to capture those sculpture in daylight. Then I headed to Cala Aguila, Cala Mesquida, Capdepera, Arta, Betlem, Colonia de Sant Pere, Urbanitzacio s’Estanyol, Son Serra de Marina, Can Picafort, Muro, Port d’Alcudia, Alcudia and returned to Muro where I booked a hotel room. I would say that Cala Mesquida is one of my favorite beaches on the Mallorca. There are beautiful pathways across the hills of sand covered with grass. Apart from the sandy beach, there is also the rocky part. Port d’Alcudia and the old part of city Alcudia, which is surrounded by walls, are also very beautiful. In Arta, I headed up to the church where I had a beautiful view of the city. Outside of Arta I also visited an old talaiotic village of Ses Paisses.
Day 5
Despite I was most excited to travel this part of the island I woke up later around 9:00. My first destination was Port de Pollenca, Cap Formentor, Pollenca, LLuc, Escorca, Port de Sa Calobra, Fornalutx, Soller, and ended back in Deia. This was my favorite part of the trip. I really liked the Cap Formentor and Playa de Formentor. I stopped at Lluc at the remote monastery which is surrounded by the wall. I really enjoyed driving on those twisted roads and especially on the Snake road to Port de Sa Calobra. But I had to be really careful because there were goats all over the place and sometimes also on the road. Fortnalux is a really beautiful village with nice streets. Soller is also a beautiful city where there is one of two first generation tramways in Spain still driving from Soller to Port de Soller. I didn’t go to Port de Soller as I have been there many times before. At night I returned to the most beautiful village Deia where I said goodbye to everybody and in the early morning, I headed to my last part of the trip.
Day 6
Last day was kind of stressful as I had to return a car at the airport by 18:00 and I were all the time looking at the clock and map how far I am. First thing in the morning I headed to Valldemossa where I wanted to take a nice picture of a city, but the sun just raised up and made a harsh line over the city, so I carried on. I stopped at Banyalbufar, Torre del Verger, Estellecs, Andratx, Port d’Andratx, Es camp de Mar, Peguera, Rotes Velles, Santa Ponsa, El Toro, Megaluf, Palmanova, Punta Negra and Cas Catala. My last stop was outside of Palma at Callo des Grells, where I packed all my stuff and headed to the airport.
Summary (mileage, expenses, conclusion…)
I wanted to travel on the lowest budget as possible. The biggest expense of trip was car rental which was 180€ + 57€ for the gas. For 2 days I slept in a car, 1 day at a friends place and 2 days at hotels, so my expenses for accommodation were 59€. Then for food, I spent 51€ and 42€ for parking and entry fees. So in total, I spent less than 400€. Together in 6 days, I made 620 km by car and 53 km by foot.
I wish I had more time to explore some places, because I just quickly passed through and I might miss something beautiful. Every place I visited had some nice charms, but I would say that my favorite part of the island is North and North-West. Most memorable places I visited would be Port de Sa Calobra and Snake road to it, Cap de Formentor, Cuevas del Drach, Es Pontas natural arc, cactus farm, Cala Mesquida, Cala Pi, village Deià, Fortnaluxe and other surrounding villages and cities. I had a greate time and this was the best adventure in my life so far.
